3rd Rock from the Sun

The two-time Emmy Award-winning best comedy about space aliens impersonating a family to explore the strange ways of Earth continues to enjoy widespread popularity a quarter century after its NBC network premiere in 1996. The series features an all-star ensemble cast led by John Lithgow, Jane Curtin, Kristen Johnston, French Stewart and a young, up-and-coming Joseph Gordon-Levitt, along with a who’s who of major guest stars.

From creators and former Saturday Night Live writers Bonnie and Terry Turner (That ‘70s Show, Wayne’s World 1 & 2, The Brady Bunch Movie), the critically acclaimed show run won many awards. At the Primetime Emmy Awards in 1997, it collected the biggest single-year haul ever at the time for a TV series by nabbing five statues out of eight nominations.

Lithgow received an Emmy nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series during each of the show’s six seasons, garnering the prize in 1996, 1997 and 1999. In addition, he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series in 1996, and for Best Male Comedy series actor the following year from the SAG Awards.
